Qarbs
Life as a person with diabetes adds a lot of complexity to every day.
If you are a person living with diabetes and need to inject insulin, it is crucial to estimate the carbohydrates of every meal to calculate the correct insulin dosage needed.
The Challenge
Correct estimations are hard
Estimating carbohydrates in order to calculate correct insulin dosage is very hard – even for experienced people living with diabetes. The main challenge is around mixed or new food that is consumed outside home, at a restaurant or a friend’s place.
The Idea
A digital companion
Everyone carries a smartphone. Having a mobile app to help you with food recognition and quantification helps. Our mobile- and backend developers, computer vision specialists, UX designers, regulatory experts and nutrition specialists built the Qarbs app and got the European Medical Devices Directive (MDD) approval for it to be used as a medical device.
The Solution
AI computer vision
To identify food, we built an AI capable of recognizing not
only what it is that you have on the plate but also
determining a 3D model of the portion to estimate the
nutritional content.
This AI then reaches into a
clinical nutrition database to provide exact carbs and
protein amounts for everything you eat.
